Sea Spray Aerosol workshop

30 Sep & 01 October, 2013

Harbour Hotel, Galway, Ireland

FMI, NUIG and TNO will organize a sea spray aerosol (SSA) workshop in Galway, Ireland, on 30 September and 1 October 2013. The focus of the workshop is on the production of SSA particles, and the use of SSA source functions in climate models to determine direct and indirect radiative effects of SSA particles on the Earth radiation balance. There will be a focus on the role of satellite observations, both for the determination of SSA production and for model evaluation.

The workshop will be organized in the context of the OceanFlux Sea Spray Aerosol project (OSSA, see http://oceanflux.fmi.fi/ for more information), one of the three projects supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the ESA STSE (Support To Science Element) in cooperation with the Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS, http://solas-int.org).

The workshop will run over two full days, starting 09:00 am. Each day includes two half-day sessions with different foci. Each session is foreseen to include invited oral presentations of 15 min each, followed by working group discussion addressing the current status of research and the way forward. Topics addressed are:

  • Sea Spray Aerosol Production & Fluxes: In-situ Experiments
  • Sea Spray Aerosol Production & Fluxes: Laboratory Experiments
  • Earth Observation & Large-Scale Modelling of Production/Dispersion
  • Earth Observation & Large-Scale Modelling Direct/Indirect Climate Effects

Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

An optional visit to Mace Head http://www.macehead.org/ is offered on Wednesday 2 October. If you are interested in participated in this tour please tick the box on the registration website.
